Canada Post's Door-to-Door Shift: Where Your Business Mail Goes Now

A cluster of community mailboxes on an autumn residential street, with two parcels too large for the boxes left leaning against the post

If your business runs from home, here is what changes when mail moves to a community mailbox

If you run your business from home in Waterloo Region, your business mail likely arrives where you live. Over the next few years, more homes will collect mail from a community mailbox down the street instead of at the front door.

Your business mail will still come to your home address. Two things change: where you pick it up, and what happens when a parcel is too big for the box.

Both take time, and in a home-based business, time is usually the thing in shortest supply. So this is a sensible moment to ask a plain question. Should your business mail keep following you home, or should it have an address of its own?

The first batch moves in late 2026 and 2027, over a five-year process

Canada Post is working to transition the first batch of the remaining door-to-door delivery addresses to community mailboxes in late 2026 and 2027, and the entire process is expected to take five years, according to reporting in The Progress.

This is a gradual change. Some addresses will move in the first batch. Others will not change for years. Community mailboxes are locked and already serve many households across the country, so for personal mail the change is mostly a new routine.

For a business run out of your home, it is worth thinking through two practical points:

  • Where your business mail is collected. Client cheques, government correspondence and supplier invoices will sit in a box down the street until you walk over and check.
  • What happens to parcels that do not fit. Any parcel too large for the box means a trip to collect it. If you order samples, stock, equipment or documents in larger envelopes, that trip becomes part of your week.

A community mailbox is still your home address

Moving the box down the street does not change what you publish. If your business registration, invoices, website and business cards list your home address, your clients still see a residential street number.

For many of the people we work with, that is the bigger issue. Solo consultants, freelancers, early-stage founders and trades businesses want to look established to the people they serve. They also want to keep their home street number off their business cards, their website and public listings.

We wrote more about this in Your Business Address Is Working Harder Than You Think. The short version: your address signals credibility, helps you show up locally, and protects your privacy. A community mailbox only handles delivery.

Your own mailbox and key at 191 King Street South

With a virtual office, your mail comes to a staffed building in Uptown Waterloo. Here is how it runs:

  • Every client is assigned their own mailbox at 191 King Street South, Suite 106, in Uptown Waterloo.
  • Every client gets their own key to that mailbox.
  • You collect mail any time during business hours, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • Add a 24/7 access card if you want to collect mail after hours, with the same key and the same mailbox.

The building is close to banks, restaurants and transit. For many clients, mail pickup fits into a trip they are already making, whether that is a bank deposit, a client lunch or a meeting in one of our rooms. You can see the details on our Location page.

A call when mail arrives, and a front desk for parcels too large for the box

We call you when mail arrives. Our team lets you know your mail is here, so you come in knowing there is something to collect. No checking at random, and no wondering whether that cheque has landed yet.

Our front desk receives your packages. During business hours, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., our front desk team accepts packages for every client, including parcels too large for a mailbox. The courier hands it to a person at the desk. You pick it up when it suits you.

That removes the parcel question entirely. You do not need to be home for a delivery window, and you do not need to plan a separate trip because something would not fit in a box. That helps most if you work on client sites, run service calls, or spend your days on the road.

We do this for clients at every level, from those who use us only for an address to teams in our private offices. It is the same desk, the same people and the same process.

If you cannot come in, your mail can come to you. Add mail forwarding to another address, or scan-and-email, and we send your mail on or email you a scan.

Your registration address can be separate from where you live

Your Chameleon address at 191 King Street South can be used for business registration. That means the address on your official records, your invoices and your website can be a Waterloo business address instead of your home.

For a budding business, this matters more than it first appears. Registration is often the first time you put an address on public record, and changing it later means updating everything that references it. Starting with a business address keeps your home and your business separate from day one, and it gives clients a professional address to see on everything you send them.

It also means your business mail has a stable home no matter what changes on your street. Whether residential delivery in your neighbourhood shifts in the first batch or years from now, your business address stays the same.

The address can grow with the business

Many of our clients start with a mailbox. Some stay right there, because an address with mail and package handling is exactly what they need. Others add pieces as their business changes: live phone answering so customers stop calling a personal cell, meeting rooms bookable from 30 minutes for client conversations, or administrative support to take invoicing and follow-up off their plate.

We have had a client start with a mailbox in 2015, add phone answering, then move into an office, and later grow to four offices before moving to a larger space of their own. They still use our phone answering today. If you want to read more about that kind of path, we wrote about it in The Best Thing That Can Happen Is That You Outgrow Us.

When the time comes, our private offices are turnkey, with coffee, supplies and WiFi included, and no maximum term.

A custom package starts with a call

We have been part of Uptown Waterloo since 2014, and we are members of the Greater KW Chamber of Commerce and the Uptown Waterloo BIA.

Whatever changes reach your street in late 2026, 2027 or later, a staffed Waterloo address takes the delivery question off your plate. Your mail goes to your own mailbox. We call when it arrives. Parcels go to a real person at the front desk. And your business has an address you can register, publish and hand to clients with confidence.

The simplest next step is a conversation. Book a call and tell us how your business runs today. We will build a custom package around what you need, whether that is the address on its own or the address plus meeting room access and admin support.

If you would rather look around first, our Package Builder walks you through the options at your own pace. Either way, we are here when you are ready to talk.
